Don't Go
From the counties of Ireland and England
Our forefathers came to conquer this land
Seeking freedom from their oppression
To build a new life in this new Newfoundland
One by one, they gathered their courage
Then by the thousands they fled to her shores
Many would die, before they could see her
But those who survived, would even the score
Don't go, don't go, don't try to stop me
Don't go, don't go, and leave me alone
Don't go, don't go, my heart is not here
The land that I love, is calling me home
For four hundred years they came to this island
They settled her harbours and lived off the sea
Piece by piece, they conquered her treasures
One by one, they fought to be free
I was born a son of this island
My name is found in her history
I have felt her kindness and anger
I must answer, she's calling to me
Don't go, don't go, don't try to stop me
Don't go, don't go, and leave me alone
Don't go, don't go, my heart is not here
The land that I love, is calling me home
My sons and my daughters
Have moved to the mainland
To work in Alberta and northern B.C.
And God only knows
How long they will be there
Living away from my island and me
Like my children before me
I moved to the mainland
Away from my island, away from my sea
But I could not stay, my heart was not there
There's no other place that I'd rather be
Don't go, don't go, don't try to stop me
Don't go, don't go, and leave me alone
Don't go, don't go, my heart is not here
The land that I love, is calling me home
The land that I love, is calling me home
The land that I love, is calling me home
